GP Guardian is a Primary Care People initiative being set up to support those known as “distressed” GPs back into independent practice. This includes those who have had a GMC investigation into their practice; those with current or previous GMC sanctions; those who cannot get indemnified through one of the MDOs; those paying commercial insurers too much for inadequate indemnity cover; those who cannot get inclusion onto the National Performer’s List; those who have conditions on their Performer’s List inclusion; and those at risk of, or suffering from, “burnout” back into independent practice. We have carried out extensive research into this so have expert knowledge of what is required to assist these GPs.
Primary Care People are aiming to arrange indemnity cover for the GPs as well as providing the ongoing training and support required in order to return them to practice and retain them once they are there. We are planning to employ a team of GP Trainers and Supervisors to support the GPs through the remediation process. We will be looking at employing some mental health professionals to give the GPs access to support as and when they need it. We will also be looking at ways to assist the supporting team with their additional indemnity costs in order to ensure we have a committed team of people to make the project a success.
The project will be launched as a not for profit organisation with the primary focus of supporting “distressed” GPs, increasing capacity in the workforce and saving the NHS money. We will be looking at attracting investors for the project and any profits made will be ploughed back into the purpose of the business. We feel that it is important for companies working within Primary Care to help address the significant issues the sector is facing and hope this initiative goes some way to solving some of the problems currently facing it.
